The Subpoena Management Unit (SMU) forms part of the Victoria Police Legal Services Department. The SMU is the central management point for all subpoenas served on Victoria Police.

The Unit’s primary responsibility is to:

  • receive
  • assess
  • coordinate
  • monitor subpoenas to ensure compliance.

The SMU provides a co-ordination and monitoring role where subpoenas are recorded on a central database and distributed for appropriate action. The Unit has implemented compliance monitoring initiatives and provides Victoria Police staff with access to appropriate resources and information to enable them to fulfil their lawful obligations.

Serving a subpoena on Victoria Police

The following process regarding receipt of subpoenas served in person at the Victoria Police Centre, Docklands applies:

In-person

In-person subpoenas must be served at Level 2, 456 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne 3000.

In-person subpoenas will only be received between the hours of:

  • 10.30am and 11.30am Monday to Friday
  • 2.30pm and 3.30pm Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays).

Please note: The above relates to in-person service only and does not affect our acceptance of subpoenas by mail. Subpoenas may be sent by mail to the above address or by e-mail to subpoena-service-smu@police.vic.gov.au

Mail

All subpoenas for Victoria Police staff, regardless of whether they are directed to the attention of:

  • individuals
  • Specialist Units
  • Task Forces
  • departments should be provided to:

Email

Where a subpoena served by mail is likely to be received less than 10 days prior to the subpoena return date, it is requested that it be e-mailed to the Subpoena Management Unit service e-mail address as soon as possible prior to it being posted.

The original of an e-mailed subpoena must be posted as soon as possible with the appropriate compliance fee attached in the form of a cheque or postal money order. If you are uncertain as to the amount of the compliance fee, please contact the Subpoena Management Unit should be contacted on(03) 8628 3010.  Please do not send cash by mail.

Paying your compliance fee

Compliance fees may be paid in the form of:

  • Cheque.
  • Postal money order.
  • Credit card.

Credit card payment over the phone or complete the attached credit card authorisation form and forward upon service of the subpoena.
